On-call radiology has historically required radiologists to be physically present at a workstation or connected via a cumbersome VPN to read urgent studies. When an emergency department calls at two in the morning for a suspected stroke CT, minutes matter. Driving to the hospital or waiting for a laptop to boot and tunnel into the PACS is time the patient does not have.
Our Mobile Reading Application changes that. Installed as a native app on the radiologist's personal iPhone, iPad, or Android device, it delivers the full reading experience — image display, measurement tools, prior comparison, and report approval — through a touch-optimised interface designed specifically for mobile clinical use.
The app is not a simplified viewer for casual reference. It is a diagnostic tool built to support real clinical decisions. Studies are rendered at full resolution with GPU acceleration. Windowing, zooming, and scrolling through slice stacks feel natural under touch. And because the app runs natively rather than in a browser tab, it can cache studies for offline reading and send push notifications when urgent exams arrive — capabilities that web-based viewers cannot match.
Practices that equip their on-call radiologists with the mobile app report faster response times and better work-life balance. Here is what changes when reading is no longer tied to a desk.
Radiologists open and begin reviewing urgent studies within seconds of notification, not minutes.
Read from home, from a remote location, or while travelling — the phone in your pocket is the workstation.
Diagnostic-quality rendering and measurement tools support confident clinical decisions on mobile.
Biometric authentication, device encryption, and remote wipe protect patient data on every device.
Six core features deliver a reading experience that is genuinely mobile — not a compromised desktop port. Each capability addresses a real need identified by practising on-call radiologists.
Native applications for both platforms, written in their respective first-party languages for maximum performance. The app supports iPhone, iPad, and popular Android phones and tablets, with a responsive interface that adapts to screen size and orientation.
GPU-accelerated rendering at full DICOM resolution with window level, width, zoom, pan, measurement, and MPR support. The app meets the image quality standards expected for primary diagnostic interpretation, not just quick review.
Studies can be pre-fetched and cached on the device for reading when no network connection is available — on a plane, in a basement, or in a rural area with poor coverage. Reports sync back to the PACS automatically once connectivity is restored.
Instant alerts when urgent or STAT studies are assigned to the radiologist's worklist. Configurable notification rules based on priority, modality, and referrer ensure the radiologist is alerted to critical exams without being overwhelmed by routine cases.
Radiologists can review, edit, and electronically sign preliminary or final reports directly from the app. Dictation, structured templates, and addendum creation are all supported, with signed reports flowing back to the RIS for distribution.
Built-in secure messaging lets radiologists communicate with technologists, referrers, and colleagues about specific studies without leaving the app. Messages are linked to the study record, encrypted end-to-end, and fully audited for compliance.
Different radiology workflows benefit from mobile reading in different ways. These are the scenarios where our clients see the greatest operational impact.
The primary use case. When the radiologist is on call overnight or over the weekend, the app eliminates the need to drive to the clinic or boot up a home workstation. A push notification wakes the radiologist, they open the study on their phone, and begin interpretation immediately. For suspected stroke, trauma, or acute abdominal cases, the minutes saved can be clinically significant.
Emergency departments and intensive care units need rapid radiology input. The app allows the on-call radiologist to provide a preliminary read or verify a critical finding while the patient is still in the scanner, supporting faster clinical decisions. STAT notifications ensure the most urgent studies are never waiting in a queue.
Radiologists who cover multiple practice locations use the app to stay connected to all sites from a single device. Worklists from different PACS instances are aggregated into one unified view, and the radiologist can switch between sites without changing apps or re-authenticating — ideal for locum and shared-service arrangements.
Teleradiology providers use the app as a lightweight reading client for their distributed radiologist network. Instead of provisioning workstations at every reading location, radiologists install the app on their own devices and connect to the central PACS. This reduces infrastructure costs and enables rapid scaling of reading capacity.
Mobile devices introduce unique security challenges. Patient data on a phone that travels everywhere demands a security model that protects information even if the device is lost or stolen. Our app implements multiple layers of defence.
All cached studies and patient data on the device are stored in an encrypted vault using the platform's hardware-backed encryption. Even if a device is physically accessed, the data remains unreadable without authentication. No unencrypted patient data is ever written to device storage.
Face ID and Touch ID integration ensures only the authorised radiologist can open the app and view studies. Biometric authentication is required on every launch and after configurable inactivity timeouts, preventing unauthorised access if the device is left unlocked.
If a device is lost or stolen, practice administrators can initiate a remote wipe that purges all cached patient data and revokes the device's access tokens instantly. Mobile device management (MDM) integration supports automatic enforcement of security policies across all installed devices.
The app runs on the vast majority of modern iOS and Android devices. Below are the minimum specifications and recommended hardware for an optimal reading experience.

The mobile app connects to our PACS, RIS, and Cloud DICOM modules to deliver a seamless reading experience across devices. Explore the rest of the platform.
The image archive that the mobile app connects to. Studies stored in the PACS are streamed to the app for diagnostic review and report approval.
The RIS feeds worklists and patient data to the mobile app, and receives approved reports back for distribution to referrers and billing.
The browser-based counterpart to the mobile app — use the native app on your phone for push notifications and offline reading, and the cloud viewer on any desktop for full-session reading.
